Can you guess the most popular assets on BUX in 2022?

It’s time to look back on the year of 2022 which has been a rollercoaster on the markets! Today we’re bringing you the most purchased assets among our user base of more than one million clients across 8 different countries. We’ll also show you which assets were the most popular on our clients’ Investment Plans.

First, some context

2022 was gripped by a difficult bear market triggered by inflation, interest rate hikes and the war in Ukraine. No stock index was spared in the damage. However, there were three small rebounds in March, June and October which injected some volatility into the stock markets and brought new opportunities for investors. Some sectors, such as defence, enjoyed significant increases.

Tech companies suffered the biggest drop in 2022, losing the large weighting they had in the S&P 500. The energy industry was the only sector to see gains in 2022 out of the 11 that make up the index. Meanwhile, banks and financial firms held up okay as they benefited from rate hikes and the increased cost of loans and mortgages.

Energy

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24th was the defining geopolitical situation in 2022 and there is still no end in sight. One of the sectors most affected, especially in Europe, was energy, which had a knock-on effect on other parts of the economy due to increased transport and production costs.

The collapse of Russian gas exports and record crude oil prices, however, has benefited the giant oil companies. Europe’s dependence on Russian energy also led to a rise in electricity prices. The silver lining, however, is that it spurred the transition to renewable energy sources.

Finance

As expected, the rise of interest rates in 2022 led to higher profits for the banks and relatively strong share prices compared to the rest of the market. Higher interest rates allow the banks to charge higher rates on mortgages and loans. However, it’s not all good news. The potential of a recession in 2023 could pose a serious danger for financial institutions.

Semiconductors

For the second year running, the tech industry has been plagued with a shortage of microchips and semiconductors. The shortage has also weighed on other industries including automotive and electronics manufacturers.

China’s strict anti-Covid policies made the situation worse, which is why the US and Europe are trying to break their dependence on the Asian manufacturers.

With all this backdrop in mind, how did BUX clients invest during the course of 2022? Let’s jump in and find out!

The most popular cryptocurrencies

The crypto universe suffered in 2022. The broad fall in the stocks, especially tech stocks, dragged the crypto markets down but things were made worse by the collapse of Terra Luna in May and the bankruptcy of FTX in November. Bitcoin and Ethereum had reached euphoric highs at the end of 2021 but spent most of this year in decline.

It is important to note, once again, that investment in crypto assets remains unregulated and highly volatile. We recommend investing only the amount that you can afford to lose.

  2. Ethereum
